Pharmaceutical Flexible Packaging Aluminum Foil

Pharmaceutical flexible packaging aluminum foil is a functional packaging material made from high-purity aluminum foil as the base, processed through lamination, coating, or film-laminating technologies. It is widely used in pharmaceutical blister packaging, medical sachets, pouches, strip packs, and various medical laminated structures.

Flexible packaging aluminum foil typically uses 8011, 8021, or 8079 aluminum alloys with a thickness range of 20-40 microns, providing 100% light, oxygen, and moisture barrier performance. It serves as a critical safeguard, protecting pharmaceuticals from environmental influences.

Common Aluminum Foil Lamination Structures

Pharmaceutical flexible packaging aluminum foil is usually laminated with plastic films or paper-based materials, such as:

PET / Al / PE

OPA / Al / CPP

Paper / Al / PE

Core Advantages of Pharmaceutical Flexible Packaging Aluminum Foil

1.Ultimate Barrier Performance (Total Barrier)

Aluminum has a highly dense crystalline structure. In theory, aluminum foil with a thickness greater than 0.025 mm provides 100% barrier protection, completely blocking water vapor, oxygen, light, and microorganisms.

2.Chemical Stability

High-quality pharmaceutical aluminum foils (such as 8011 and 8021 alloys) remain chemically inert when in contact with most pharmaceutical products and do not undergo chemical reactions.

3.Light Protection

Aluminum foil reflects almost all visible and ultraviolet light, protecting light-sensitive drugs (such as certain vitamins and antibiotics) from photodegradation.

4.High and Low Temperature Resistance

Capable of withstanding temperatures from -30°C to +120°C, making it suitable for frozen, refrigerated, and ambient storage conditions.

5.Excellent Printability

The surface supports high-resolution printing for mandatory pharmaceutical labeling. Advanced laser coding technologies can engrave unique identification codes (UDI) on the aluminum foil layer, enabling full lifecycle traceability of medicines.

6.Hygienic Production Environment

Pharmaceutical aluminum foil production strictly follows GMP standards, ensuring no oil residue and no microbial contamination on the surface.

Application Scenarios

1. Blister Packaging (PTP Aluminum Foil)

Applications: Tablets, capsules, suppositories, and other solid oral dosage forms.
Requirements: Excellent heat-sealing performance with PVC, PVDC, PP, or aluminum base films; clean and easy peelability; special mechanical design for child-resistant (CR) packaging.

2. Cold Form Aluminum Foil (Cold Form Foil / Alu-Alu)

Applications: Blister packaging with extremely high protection requirements, where both sides are aluminum foil.
Requirements: Uses 8021-O (soft temper) aluminum foil, laminated with OPA (nylon) and PVC layers. Outstanding ductility is required, allowing deep drawing during cold forming without pinholes or cracks-even microscopic ones.

3. Laminated Pouches and Stand-Up Pouches

Applications: Granules, powders, diagnostic reagents, and sterile medical device packaging.
Requirements: Good flexibility, puncture resistance, and strong edge sealing.

4. Sealing Lid Materials

Applications: Aluminum-plastic composite sealing films for bottled pharmaceuticals such as oral liquids and eye drop bottles.
Requirements: Extremely high sealing integrity and tamper-evident performance, with clean peel-off and no residue.
